Key Differentiations for Trainers and Mediators

As a trainer or mediator — or as someone preparing for these roles — you already know that communication rarely becomes difficult because of lack of goodwill or commitment. More often, challenges arise when different layers of experience are blended together and treated as if they were the same. Content is confused with process. Intention with impact. Empathy with agreement.

This program offers a space to slow down and refine your capacity to differentiate.

Based on Liv Larsson’s book Cracking the Communication Code, this advanced training centers on Key Differentiations (KDs) as a foundation for professional discernment. These differentiations are not about rules, formulas, or correct ways of communicating. They support your ability to notice what is happening — moment by moment — so that your choices as a trainer or mediator remain informed, flexible, and responsive to context.

A core intention of this training is to support NVC practice that stays alive rather than dogmatic. When distinctions are misunderstood as prescriptions, practice can easily slip into rigidity — what many practitioners recognize as the “dogma trap.” Key Differentiations help prevent this by restoring choice. They allow you to see what you are doing without judging it, and to choose consciously rather than follow internalized “shoulds.”

For those working with conflict, groups, or learning processes, this capacity is essential. It supports the ability to stay with complexity without rushing toward solutions, and to remain present when there are no clear answers.

Over five months, you will meet online with the Trainer team: Liv Larsson (Sweden), Gonca Fide (Türkiye), and Kay Rung (Sweden)

This program is not about becoming “better” at NVC or applying it correctly. It is about cultivating the maturity needed to stay present with complexity, ambiguity, and conflict — without collapsing into certainty, technique, or avoidance. The focus is on developing discernment, humility, and freedom of choice.

If you are committed to practicing and teaching NVC in ways that remain human, flexible, and grounded in awareness rather than dogma, this five-month journey offers a spacious and rigorous path forward.

The process of learning

Learning the key differentiations at the heart of Nonviolent Communication is not just an intellectual exercise — it is a profound invitation to grow into the kind of person you want to be. These differentiations help us notice, with gentle clarity, the subtle moments where connection is possible but easily lost. They illuminate the difference between reacting and responding, between defending and revealing, between trying to be right and choosing to be real.

When we learn these nuances — the difference between an observation and an interpretation, a feeling and a thought, a need and a strategy — we begin to see ourselves and others through a more compassionate lens. Instead of getting tangled in habits we didn’t choose, we gain the freedom to relate with intention. Each differentiation becomes a small doorway to self-awareness, and each moment of awareness expands our capacity for empathy.

Mastering NVC is less about perfect communication and more about cultivating a way of being that honors the dignity of everyone involved, including ourselves. The key differentiations serve as a kind of inner compass: they guide us toward honesty without blame, strength without domination, care without self-abandonment.

In learning them, we become more skillful at creating the kinds of relationships that reflect our deeper values — relationships grounded in mutual understanding, authenticity, and respect. And as our clarity grows, so does our ability to contribute to a more compassionate world, one conversation at a time.

Course Description

This five months online program is designed for those who are on their way toward NVC trainer certification or who have been studying Nonviolent Communication for several years and now feel called to deepen their understanding. Over fourteen 3-hour meetings, we cultivate a supportive, reflective learning community where experience, curiosity, and shared commitment to growth shape the journey.

Each session offers a rich blend of advanced conceptual exploration, experiential practice, and nuanced self-reflection. Together, we will work with key differentiations that are essential for trainer-level clarity — distinctions that help us move with greater precision and compassion through complex interpersonal dynamics. We will revisit foundational principles with fresh eyes, uncover subtle habits that limit connection, and refine the inner quality of presence that lies at the heart of NVC.

Throughout the course, participants engage in practice sessions, dialogue labs, and guided inquiries that invite both personal transformation and professional embodiment. You are encouraged to bring real-life situations, questions, and edges from your own learning path, allowing the course to meet you exactly where your growth is unfolding.

By the end of the program, you can expect to:

  • Deepen your understanding of the core principles and key differentiations essential for trainer development

  • Strengthen your capacity to navigate challenging conversations with grounded empathy and clarity

  • Increase your self-connection and awareness of patterns that either support or hinder authenticity

  • Refine your ability to offer empathic presence and resonant feedback to others

  • Build a more embodied, values-based foundation for future trainer certification or advanced NVC engagement.
