What if you could say what truly matters — and really hear what others don't say?

At Friare Liv, we've spent over 30 years exploring what it means to communicate with presence, honesty, and care. Through Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and a developmental lens, we offer programs, books, and mediation for those ready to go deeper — into themselves, their relationships, and the conflicts that matter most.

Why NVC — and why now

Most of us were never taught how to actually listen, or how to say the hard thing without wrecking the relationship. NVC gives you both.

Here's what we've noticed after 30+ years of teaching this, though: the NVC that works for you in year one often isn't the NVC you need in year five. Your practice keeps growing, because you keep growing. That's why we don't just teach a formula — we help you notice where you actually are right now, so the practice keeps meeting you there instead of leaving you stuck on step one.

How the practice grows with you

Take a hard conversation with your partner.

Early on, NVC might mean slowing down enough to name what you observe, how you feel, what you need, and what you'd like to ask for. That alone changes a lot of conversations — it's the difference between reacting and choosing.

Later, something shifts. You notice there isn't just one "you" in the conflict — there's the part that wants to be right, the part that's scared of being left, the part that just wants the fighting to stop. The practice becomes less about the right words and more about getting curious: which part of me is driving right now, and what does it actually need?

Later still, the question isn't just about your inner world or theirs — it's about the pattern between you. What keeps recreating this same fight? What would need to change in how you two relate, not just in this one conversation, so it stops happening?

None of these is "more advanced" in a way that makes the earlier ones wrong — they're what growth looks like when you stick with this work long enough to outgrow your own first answers. Our programs, coaching, and mediation work are built to meet you at whichever one you're in right now.

Enhanced Relationships and Conflict Resolution

  • NVC fosters deeper connections and more meaningful relationships through empathetic listening and authentic expression.

  • It offers practical tools for navigating conflicts peacefully — and over time, helps you shift how you show up in relationships altogether, not just how you handle difficult moments.

Improved Emotional Intelligence and Self-Expression

  • NVC cultivates greater self-awareness and emotional intelligence by helping you recognize, understand, and express your feelings and needs.

  • From a developmental perspective, this is more than a communication skill — it's an invitation to grow into a more integrated version of yourself, with clearer boundaries, deeper self-trust, and more authentic confidence.

Collaboration, Compassion, and Personal Growth

  • NVC fosters a collaborative mindset built on mutual respect and understanding — and supports a deeper shift in how you relate to yourself and others over time.

  • Through our programs, coaching, and mediation work, we accompany people in a process of ongoing development: building empathy and compassion not as techniques, but as ways of being.
